Learn the rules of Sokoban

Read the aim of Sokoban, then make your first move. Push every crate onto a target. Look at what changes after your first action. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Something to practise

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Make the next step deliberately.

The challenge in front of you

Push every crate onto a target. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Notice how the game responds to your input.

How a round unfolds

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

One way to understand the rules

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Notice the change in the playing area.

Pay attention to this rule

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
