Read before your next round of Backgammon

Start Backgammon by looking at the playing area and its controls. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Look at what changes after your first action. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Try a more deliberate round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Use the example to check your reasoning.

What the game asks you to do

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Work through the instructions

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Making selections and moves

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Check any mode label before starting.

A closer look at one example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Consider the next action carefully.

Keep this in mind

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
