Star Battle: learn through an example

Read the aim of Star Battle, then make your first move. Place one star in each row, column and region, with no touching stars even diagonally. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Solve ten 6×6 puzzles with one star in every row, column and region. These boards use the one-star rule.

Something to practise

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Refer to the controls when needed.

The challenge in front of you

Place one star in each row, column and region, with no touching stars even diagonally. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. The example below illustrates a decision.

Work through the instructions

  1. Tap to place a star, mark a cell or clear it.
  2. Respect fixed starter stars.
  3. Check rows, columns and coloured regions.
  4. Check puzzle verifies the final arrangement.

Using the playing area

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Look at the feedback after the action.

An example to follow

A placed star rules out all eight neighbouring squares. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Take a moment to compare.

One detail worth checking

Different rows do not make diagonal neighbours legal. Compare the situation with the worked example. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
